Bringing real-time performance to Utility

Orga Systems masters complex billing challenges

Paderborn (Germany), 17 April 2012: There is a clearly economic, political and social pressure to use energy more efficiently and telecoms have a role to play. If Utility companies want to move from monthly or quarterly billing to a system that measures and charges by the hour or the minute, then telecoms billing companies are a natural supplier of the technology. Orga Systems offers convergence beyond fixed and wireless. Its Dynamic Energy Billing enables dynamic pricing and real-time rating of consumption data to support the growing adoption of Smart Grids and Smart Metering technology. It provides flexible tariff capabilities to improve the efficiency of energy generation, distribution and usage while reducing CO2-Emissions.

Monetization of consumption at all times
By moving the tariffs and rating from a smart meter to a centralized IT system, it is possible to utilize dynamic tariffing and billing on a network-wide basis. The meter provides information and readings on a real-time basis which can be used by the energy company to flexibly monitor consumption at all parts of the network as well as using information to detect theft of energy from pirate connections. The key is the central IT based system, which ensures accurate pricing and prevents fraud by e.g. introducing pre-payment schemes to the customers.

Benefitting from Direct Load Control
The average home wastes 25% of its energy; to continuously decrease energy waste Orga Systems enables the customer to choose different tariffs and sources of energy at different times of the day. Green technology is generated by offering the customer opportunities to use appliances when energy is cheaper. Orga Systems Energy & Billing Platform is able to bill energy usage in line with highly dynamic hourly spot market prices. The dynamic prices are used to trigger a Demand Side Management (DSM) for selected home devices. Given a green energy scenario, the focus would be on the substitution of fossil fuels (gas, oil) for water heating of private households in times when excessive and cheap renewable energy from the electricity grid is available.
***

The challenge: Finding the right business case
The electricity industry is changing rapidly – forcing utility companies to find new and more intelligent ways of managing their energy supply infrastructure. In the end finding the right business cases is essential to utility companies. Throughout Asia Pacific, utilities are increasingly implementing smart grid initiatives, beginning with the deployment of smart meters. According to Analysts, the total installed base of smart meters in the region will see a compound annual growth rate of 37%, increasing from 52.8 million in 2010 to over 350 million by 2016. The adoption of smart meters is surging and electric utilities are accelerating their deployments of the devices while looking for communication networks and integrated intelligence to enable increased visibility and management of electricity usage.

Leading Asian MNO upgrades to Orga Systems’ Next Generation Control Point

Integrated Data Charging and Policy Management

Paderborn (Germany), 03 April 2012: Orga Systems’ latest version of its Next Generation Control Point (NGCP) has been installed at a leading Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in Asia. The NGCP is an integrated Data Charging and Policy Management Platform – a winning combination that monetizes real-time services by enabling operators to move to bandwidth based pricing and form a sustainable cost structure. Policy Management is a key enabler to create customer loyalty and easily allows operators to address new segments - one of the most difficult and yet important task in a highly competitive and drastically changing mobile market.

Real-time Monetization of 3G Data Services on one Single Platform
The NGCP is 3GPP compliant, making today’s investments future-proof while supporting latest service innovations in an MNO’s next generation network. This benefit assured the leading Asian MNO in upgrading to NGCP. It’s exactly the reliable performance and scalability which is the key to monetize the massive growth in mobile 3G data services and increase revenue. Orga Systems’ NGCP provides a single platform for all types of subscribers (pre and postpaid) while charging all services (data, VAS, etc.). This real-time charging, online mediation and policy control solution cools down the big data effect. It supports operators to move away from flat rate pricing to customer and network service diversity while ensuring superior customer experience. It enables MNOs to roll out an integrated Policy and Charging in a more innovative manner without new hardware investments or challenging integration projects.

As recent deployments of NGCP show, it has been achieving significant results in terms of performance by 300%, operation efficiency and improved customer experience. Orga Systems has been awarded for these outstanding results, e.g. by receiving the Global Broadband Traffic Management (BBTM) Award in the category “Best use of traffic management for improving customer experience”.

Dynamic billing of energy and value-added services for smart home environments

Paderborn (Germany), 06 March 2012: At this year’s CeBIT, Orga Systems demonstrates its Energy & Service Billing Platform at the Connected Living Hall 26. The system is able to bill energy usage in line with highly dynamic hourly spot market prices and will be shown in a “Wind-to-Home” scenario. The dynamic prices are used to trigger a Demand Side Management (DSM) for selected home devices. The focus is on the substitution of fossil fuels (gas, oil) for water heating of private households in times when excessive and cheap wind energy from the electricity grid is available.

Integrate into the Connected Living IT architecture
Orga Systems is partner of the research initiative “Connected Energy - SHAPE” co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). All services are integrated into the Connected Living IT architecture and operate through a Home Service Platform (HSP) and a Service Provider Platform (SPP). The end user saves consumption costs while energy service providers are able to bring additional energy to market. The substitution of fossil fuels reduces CO2-Emissions – a benefit for society and environment.

The following key aspects are:

User can activate dynamic price control for a device (value added service)

Energy service provider (aggregator) receives forecasts of storage capacity

Home automation systems switches the device (e.g. heating rod) according to dynamic energy price

User is able to prompt consumption and current expenses for the household (Smart Metering) and selected devices (Sub-Metering) enabled for Wind-to-Home tariffs

User retrieves weekly bills and notifications of threshold in between

System is extensible for other DSM applications e.g. heat-pumps, electrical vehicles
